Some say he invented reality tv, but where is the infamous Richard Hatch now?

Cast your mind waaaaaaay back to the year 2000, when Survivor came along and created a reality tv revolution. Many say Richard Hatch is to thank.

Hatch invented alliances and was the forefather of Survivor backstabbing and deception. The openly gay strategist who walked around naked all day, teamed up with old-school war veteran, Rudy, for one of the most unlikely alliances of all time.

Being the very first winner, Richard was a celebrity not just in the States, but around the globe, eventually returning for season 8, Survivor All-Stars, in 2004.

With the US Survivor series currently in its 33rd season and Australian Survivor about to wrap up our very first (since the revival), it’s safe to say Richard certainly paved the way for the titan show.

Richard has returned to TV in a handful of other reality shows since then, including The Apprentice, The Biggest Loser, Temptation Nation, Dog Eat Dog, Battle Of The Network Reality Stars and even Australia’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

In 2006, Hatch made news again, being found guilty of tax evasion, serving over three years in federal prison before heading back for an extra nine months in 2011 for not fixing the same error.

All these years later, Richard is still very much connected to the show, last year featuring in a Natural Geographic doco-series The 2000s: A New Reality.

Speaking with realityblurred.com, Richard reminisced , “I had a sense that Survivor the show was a really unique series and that people were going to respond to it, but there’s no way anyone could have predicted its longevity. I’m surprised by the pathway that I’ve followed, the journey that I’ve been on.”

He also revealed he was applying to Brown University to get a PhD in philosophy, as well as going into television production.

Most recently, Richard uploaded this video to Facebook expressing his most recent thoughts on reality and truth, relating it to his upcoming series ‘Reality Matters’.

Richard also adopted a son in 1998 and in 2005 married boyfriend Emiliano Cabral.
