Tony Jones has opened up about exactly what caused that ridiculously awkward moment on TV with Bec Judd.
Peter Hitchener and Tony were saying farewell to weather presenter Bec on the Channel 9 Melbourne News when Tony leaned in for a kiss. But Bec shut him down, causing one of the most awkward live TV moments ever.
“The boss emailed and said ‘Listen, can you hang around because it’s Bec’s last night with us and it would be nice to say good luck and all the rest of it’,” Tony told Triple M’s Hot Breakfast.
“I thought ‘Or well, It’s not like we’ve not done that before’. Anyway, so we did it. I thought nothing of it. I just thought I’d give her a peck on the cheek for good luck and it ended up quite awkward didn’t it.”
And that awkward feeling lasted all night long.
“I was driving home, and I had the air con in the car because I was just so hot, I was so red. I’m driving home thinking the one saving grace is my family don’t watch our news. I’m thinking, at least I’m not going to have to go through it all when I get home. Anyway, I walked in and my wife and daughter were sitting in the lounge room and they just burst out laughing,” he said.
“They said ‘That was the most creepiest thing we’ve seen’ and I thought ‘Oh no’...Clearly it was all fun. I mean it was all fun. I mean some people are trying to make it more than that but it was.”
