Sunrise presenter, Sam Armytage, has revealed to Australian Women’s Weekly that she nearly quit her job after one particular incident.
It was an interview with the British Aylmer twins who looked completely different due to their mixed-race parentage.
Sam said, “The Aylmer twins come from a mixed race family in the UK. Maria has taken after her half-Jamaican mum with dark skin, brown eyes and curly, dark hair.
“But Lucy got her dad’s fair skin – good on her – along with straight red hair and blue eyes.”
Sam received endless backlash, due to the phrase “good on her” which was considered a racist remark. It was as if Sam had praised Lucy for her fair skin, however she later revealed it was a self-deprecating remark at her own pale appearance.
That didn’t stop the hurl of negativity on social media though, with some people going as far as sending death threats.
The 39-year-old TV presenter said that in the end she decided to stay in her job because she didn’t want the critics to win.
“I thought about quitting for a split second and then I thought, absolutely not – I’m not going to let the haters win.”
Sam did make an on-air apology after her comments.
