A former Neighbours star has died after becoming ill during a theatre show.

Russell Kiefel was performing in And I’m The Queen Of Sheba at the Brown’s Mart Theatre in Darwin when he became unwell. He later passed away.

“I met Russell in the first week of rehearsals and immediately recognised that he was a generous, funny and cheeky man,” director Sean Pardy told News Corp.

“It was an honour to meet him and a privilege to see him perform on the Brown’s Mart stage.”

The theatre has cancelled the rest of the season out of respect for the actor.

Russell played the father of the Brennan brothers on the long running Australian soap in 2015.

Russell’s Neighbours co-stars have taken to social media to pay tribute to the actor.
