WhatsApp is doing that whole ‘new year, new me’ thing this January and a whole lot of Australians are about to get ditched.
The messaging and calling app has announced they will discontinue functioning on older models of smartphones throughout next year, starting this January!
With WhatsApp first hitting phones in 2009, the company has stated they are due for a big upgrade.
"The Apple App Store was only a few months old. About 70 percent of smartphones sold at the time had operating systems offered by BlackBerry and Nokia.
"Mobile operating systems offered by Google, Apple and Microsoft – which account for 99.5% of sales today – were on less than 25% of mobile devices sold at the time.
"As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use."
Here’s a list of phones that will no longer be compatible with WhatsApp in January and then later after June 30:
- Android 2.1 & Android 2.2
- Windows Phone 7
- iPhone 3GS / iOS 6
- Blackberry OS and Blackberry 10
- Nokia S40
- Nokia Symbian S60
So, if you want to keep using WhatsApp but have an old phone, looks like it's time for an upgrade.
