Ever wondered why bridesmaids are supposed to wear the same dress at weddings? Neither have we, but it turns out there’s a legitimate reason… and it’s bloody creepy.

According to Mental Floss, the tradition comes from Ancient Rome. Back then, it wasn’t just bridesmaids who would match… the bride would also jump on the bandwagon and rock the exact same dress.

But why? The bridesmaids would be acting as a decoy. The altar would be populated with ladies who look exactly the same. This was to ward off evil spirits, as it was believed that weddings and other “glad tidings” would attract demons and the like.

It was the bridesmaids’ responsibility to protect the bride from these devilish beings.

Although the tradition has carried through to modern times, we’re not so sure the intention serves the same purpose as it did in Ancient Rome. Nowadays, no one except the bride is meant to wear white, so she ends up standing out from the crowd instead of blending in!
