We absolutely fell in love with Mara Wilson who played the little but big-hearted Matilda in the 1996 film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic novel.
Alongside Matilda, Mara Wilson starred as childhood classic personalities such as Natalie Hillard in Mrs. Doubtfire and Susan Walker in Miracle on 34th Street.
We always love hearing about the famous film Matilda as it was literally the best film in the world when we were young! But, we didn't ever realise there is way more to Matilda than we ever realised.
Recently, Mara has taken her love for writing to tell her story as a child actor, releasing her own book called Where Am I Now: True Stories of Girl and Accidental Fame.
Some of the stories included in the novel is how Mara’s mother passed away when she was only 8 years old. Which we didn’t know at all! Mara was so hurt from the experience she could barely remember the film Matilda coming out or even attending the premiere.
In an author interview with NPR Books Mara said:
"I was very depressed, I was very anxious, I can barely even remember Matilda coming out. I only have vague memories of the premiere and it was really hard for me."
Mara has also opened up about the struggles of being a child actor who was going through puberty. She explained that she felt like directors didn’t know what to do with her once she began going through puberty. We can only imagine!
Mara after leaving acting behind said that being rejected from the acting world for no longer being the child actor was one of the toughest things she went through until she found solace in writing.
We seriously cannot wait to read her book and wish Mara and all her future endevours the best of luck!
