This morning the world awoke to the news that beloved actress Carrie Fisher had passed away.

She suffered a cardiac episode on a plane only days ago and although her mother, Debbie Reynolds, assured fans that she was in a stable condition, Princess Leia simply could not hold on.

Tributes have flooded in from all corners of the globe as Carrie has belonged in the hearts of many ever since her first film appearance as Leia in Star Wars: A New Hope.

She took on the role at just 19 years old and her co-stars, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill, have both released statements following her death.

About his on-screen love, Harrison said:

“Carrie was one-of-a-kind…brilliant, original. Funny and emotionally fearless.
"She lived her life, bravely.
"We will all miss her."

Mark took to Twitter to release his statement. Both he and Carrie starred in Star Wars very early in their acting careers and he posted a photo of them together simply saying "no words #devastated".

The three actors all starred in the most recent Star Wars film The Force Awakens only last year.

Carrie will be missed incredibly.
