'... Baby One More Time' is one of the most ambiguous songs around, but it turns out there was a massive mistake everyone has misunderstood...
Britney Spears' breakout hit track, '... Baby One More Time' is something we all remember. Either we were the ones dressing up in school girl uniforms with pigtails and belting out the tune, or we watched in astonishment as other people did...
Nonetheless it is something we all reminisce on from our childhood.
So to find out that there was actually a pretty big mistake in the song is a HUGE thing. Massive. Childhood changing... well, maybe we won't go that far.
The songwriters behind the beloved song were a duo from Sweden, who believed she'd make it a chart topper. Of course, it definitely was one!
Even though the duo were Swedish, you'd think they'd be on top of their English, right?
Well, it turns out there was a major issue of mistranslation... in the main line of the song!
We've all had our questions and fair share of confusion as to what the hell 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' means, and it turns out a lot of our thoughts were right.
The writers explained in a book that the song was about a teenager who's trying to get her ex to call her back... and they thought the words 'hit' and 'call' could be used interchangeably...
Obviously, they were wrong. They aren't the same thing at all.
Finally, our 17-years of confusion has been put to rest, and we can't help but wonder if the song would still be as catchy if the right word had been used!
We're getting Carly Rae Jepson feels...
Sub in 'call' for 'hit' when you listen to it and let us know your thoughts!
