Tilikum, the orca that was filmed for the documentary Blackfish, has passed away.
"Tilikum passed away early this morning, January 6, surrounded by the trainers, care staff and veterinarians that provided him around-the-clock world-class care," Seaworld said in a statement released on their website.
In March, Seaworld announced that the orca may have been dying because of strange behaviour.
Seaworld's CEO Joel Manby said, "Tilikum had, and will continue to have, a special place in the hearts of the SeaWorld family, as well as the millions of people all over the world that he inspired."
"My heart goes out to our team who cared for him like family."
Experts believe that Tilikum may have died from a bacterial lung infection, but it is yet to be confirmed.
The orca was the subject for the confronting documentary Blackfish, which detailed the treatment of killer whales inside the Seaworld parks.
In 2016, it was revealed that Seaworld will no longer be housing orcas at the water parks meaning Tilikum was a part of the parks last generation of killer whales.
The whale has been linked to three deaths at the water park after being captured off the coast of Iceland 25 years ago.
Fans have expressed their sadness at the whales passing.
