Harry Potter casting director Janet Hirshenson has revealed how close Robin Williams came to playing one of our favourite characters.
The legendary actor/comedian had personally called Philosopher Stone director Christopher Columbus expressing his interest in playing Hagrid!
Although he would have nailed the role, every HP fan knows J.K. Rowling had demanded an all-British cast, providing hundreds of jobs for British actors and crew workers.
“He really wanted to be in the movie, but it was a British-only edict. And once [Columbus] said no to Robin, he wasn’t going to say yes to anybody else, that’s for sure. It couldn’t be,” Hirshenson revealed to Huffington Post.
Williams had worked with Columbus previously in Mrs. Doubtfire and Bicentennial Man, and although he would have been an amazing Hagrid, there’s no denying the part was embraced perfectly by the great Robbie Coltrane.
