We know it, you know it, we’ve all heard it… yet somehow, hooking up with your ex still seems like a good idea sometimes. But science is here to say 'nope'.

In a study published in America’s Journal Of Adolescent Research, researchers found that

“Having sex with an ex could put young adults in a position of technically being broken up, but still emotionally connected… Those who stay in contact following a breakup continue to feel the pain of the breakup more intensely and may have more difficulty moving on.”

The study was based on 795 young adults, with half admitting they reunited with an ex. They also found that over half of those who split continued a sexual relationship.

One reason couples return to each other post-breakup, surprise surprise, is due to fear of the unknown, continuing life without the other.

The study also found that men are more likely to want to get back together. While older woman are more likely to want to move on.

A separate study conducted by the University of Nebraska in the Journal Of Social and Personal Relationships found that the ‘we’ll just be friends’ approach often doesn't work either, as someone is usually still emotionally attached.

It’s not all depressing news though, there are always exceptions!

There are plenty of on-again-off-again relationships that end with the couple growing old together (yay!)… but just remember, there’s also a lot that end with a bang!
