The researchers concluded that the personality types associated with these foods tend to possess characteristics of “Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, and everyday sadism”.
This conclusion was reached after two separate experiments were conducted in which 1,000 participants were asked to examine and rank a long list of foods and drinks they enjoyed. After this, the also took a personality test that measured their "psychopathic tendencies".
One of the researchers involved in the study, Christina Sagioglou suggestd why this may be.
"Most people are put off by bitter tasting things because we associate them with wild, poisonous foods. Fearless psychopaths, however, are supposedly attracted by this. Everyday sadism is a construct related to benign Masochism – the enjoyment of painful activities."
